Duruiheakor Village

Umuduru Iheakor Village, commonly referred to as Iheakor, is one of the fourteen villages that make up Amiyi-Akah in Imo State, Nigeria. It is recognized as the eleventh village following the 1970 harmonization of the Amiyi-Akah community and is known for its rich historical, cultural, and developmental heritage.

The village traces its ancestry to Umuduru Iheakor, the fourth son of Diwuoha, who was a brother to Durunwanne, now known as Ndiuhu village. It shares close ancestral ties with neighboring communities, including Umunwaemeka, and is geographically situated between Umunkuta and the wider Umuakpuru bloc. At the center of the village lies an ancient square known as Amaigidi, which serves as a focal point for social, cultural, and communal activities.

The lineage of Umuduru Iheakor is built on two sons, Duru-Unaegbu and Nwaosuocha, whose descendants later expanded into four major kindreds: Duru-Iregbu, Duru-Unanwa, Duru-Obielu, and Duru-Emeghara. Leadership within the village has traditionally been organized along these family lines, with the head chief often emerging from the Duru-Iregbu kindred, particularly the Dimpka family.

Umuduru Iheakor has a long-standing reputation for leadership in community organization. It was the first village in Amiyi to establish a formal meeting structure as early as 1944, setting a precedent that was later adopted by other villages. The village maintains an inclusive governance system with both men’s and women’s wings actively participating in decision-making and development. These groups meet regularly and operate on defined tenures to ensure continuity and accountability in leadership.

The people of Umuduru Iheakor are known for their strong cultural identity and communal harmony. The village celebrates the Oghu Festival annually from June to August, as well as Ekeleke dance performances during the Christmas season. These cultural events strengthen unity, preserve heritage, and promote community pride. The people are predominantly Christians and are widely regarded as peaceful, hospitable, and community-oriented.

Umuduru Iheakor has distinguished itself as a pace-setting village within Amiyi-Akah, with a record of notable achievements. It played a key role in the introduction of the Catholic Church in Amiyi from Ebenta Isiokpo in present-day Rivers State. The village also produced the first indigenous Reverend Father and priest in the community, as well as pioneers in politics, education, and civil service. It has made significant contributions to sports, including football, and was instrumental in the establishment of private educational institutions. Indigenes of the village have risen to prominent positions in national service, including attaining the rank of Director General in security services and diplomat.

The village is also home to accomplished professionals across diverse fields such as medicine, engineering, education, business, and public service, with many making meaningful contributions both within Nigeria and internationally. The progress and development of Umuduru Iheakor have been shaped by the efforts of its pioneer leaders, including Chief Batholomew Ihentuge Durunamma and Chief Bernard Ekwulugo-Duruachazie, whose legacies continue to inspire the community.

Today, Umuduru Iheakor Village stands as a symbol of unity, leadership, and progressive development within Amiyi-Akah. With a strong foundation rooted in tradition and a forward-looking spirit, the village continues to preserve its cultural identity while embracing growth and advancement.
